Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's basketball team (14-8, 10-8 SAC) defeated the No. 8 ranked Lincoln Memorial Lady Railsplitters (21-2, 16-2 SAC) by a final of 56-52 at Eleazer Arena. It is the second time this season Newberry has defeated a ranked opponent. The Wolves defeated No. 7 ranked Limestone in the second game of the season.
Nicola Handreck notched her fourth double-double on the season, which includes her second in the last three games with a 22-point, 10-rebound performance. The junior guard has four of the six double doubles for Newberry on the seaosn.
Hannah Lepaio provided important minutes off the bench coming down with a career-high nine rebounds against the nation's ninth-ranked rebounding teams. The Wolves outrebounded the Lady Railsplitters 41-34.
Junior guard Samara Hill also tied a career-high with six defensive rebounds on the afternoon.
Newberry's first half defense smothered the Lady Railsplitters' offense holding them to 5-of-27 from the floor in 20 minutes. The Wolves used their defense to create a 14-point advantage heading into halftime.
Newberry built their lead as high as 20 points with just over two minutes left in the third quarter before Lincoln Memorial went on an 8-0 run to close out the quarter. The Lady Railsplitters then put together a 10-0 run late in the fourth quarter to pull within three as the clock neared a minute to play.
The teams traded possessions before Handreck knocked down a crucial free throw with four seconds left to put the Wolves up four, ultimately sealing the win.
In the Wolves first four February games, Handreck is averaging 20.3 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game.
Shelby Britten was the only other starter for Newberry in double figures finishing with 11 points.
Megan Pittman of Lincoln Memorial entered the day as the teams leading scorer, which included averaging a double-double on the season. Pittman was held to 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting, and only grabbed four rebounds. The Lady Railsplitters finished the game shooting just 11 percent from beyond the arc.
Newberry will seek out revenge when they host Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
The team announced their date for their annual pink game in support for breast cancer awareness, which will take place vs. Lenoir-Rhyne. The team will wear pink accessories to show support to the survivors as well as raise awareness.
