Whitlow lifts Newberry past Catawba for its first road win

SALISBURY, N.C. - Toni-Anne Whitlow posted a season-high 22 kills in the Wolves' vital 3-2 road win against Catawba. Whitlow is the only player to record over 20 kills in a single game this season.

"Getting a win on the road in this conference is always tough, but we needed this tonight," said head coach Callie Youngman. "Toni-Anne and Sidra carried the load offensively for us tonight. Both of them seem to be coming alive at a time when we really need them."

After splitting the series 2-2, the Wolves looked to stifle the Indians in the fifth set to give them their second straight victory. Five ties defined the set early until Newberry pulled away and a kill from Vanessa Blas secured the 15-11 win.

Kensley Jordan contributed to the defense tallying 22 digs in the contest.

The Wolves fell behind early 15-9 but attack errors from Catawba proved to be the difference. The Indians committed a game-high 10 attack errors to allow Newberry to rally to tie it 18-18. Back-to-back kills from Sidra Triplett and Whitlow gave the Wolves the its second lead of the frame 20-19. A 5-4 push from Newberry gave them the 25-23 win.

Going into the third set with each team winning a set apiece the Wolves looked to recover and gain the lead. Ties continued to be exchanged until two kills from Tricia Davie pushed Newberry to a two-point 14-12 lead. A 5-2 run forced a Catawba timeout and another kill by Davie gave Newberry the 25-21 edge.

Newberry dropped the second and fourth set to force a fifth frame in the conference matchup.

Action will resume next Friday, Oct. 13 as Newberry faces undefeated Wingate at Eleazer Arena with tipoff at 7 p.m.
