Undefeated Wingate overwhelms Newberry

NEWBERRY - Coming off of two straight victories, Newberry was overpowered by No. 24 ranked Wingate in a 3-0 sweep.

Azhia Carter totaled a team-high eight kills in her best appearance since Sept. 2 against Southern Wesleyan.

The second set showed Newberry's strongest performance of the night with the team totaling a game-high 18 points. The Wolves had 14 kills throughout the set compared to 16 from the Bulldogs. A kill from Wingate's Katie Bludau ended to set 25-18.

Sidra Triplett and Zoe Dinkins contributed seven kills apiece while Taylor Garrison had 27 assists. This marked Dinkins return after sustaining an injury earlier in the season.

"It was great tonight to have Zoe back on the court. It's been a long time coming with her injury and she provided a great spark for us," said head coach Callie Youngman

Newberry started with a 4-3 lead, but committed nine errors in the first set and could not recover to lose the frame 25-14.

The Wolves tallied 19 errors on the night and were outscored in assists, kills, and blocks. Both teams were tied in digs with 44 apiece.

Despite a strong second set, Newberry struggled to regain control of the game and lost the final set 25-15. Wingate remains undefeated on the season with the win.

"It just came down to players making plays, offensively and defensively. We just did not make enough."

Newberry will return to Eleazer Arena tomorrow at 5 p.m. to face Queens.
