NEWBERRY - After enduring a five-game losing streak, Newberry was able to capitalize on Lenoir-Rhyne's mistakes to claim their third conference win with a 3-1 score.
Sidra Triplett dominated the Wolves' offense racking up a record 19 kills in four sets and a .366 hitting percentage. Toni-Anne Whitlow came in a close second with 16 kills on the night, respectively.
Going into the third set with a 2-0 lead, the Wolves kept momentum on their side throughout most of the set. Newberry held the lead early on with Lenoir-Rhyne tying the score eight times before the Wolves pulled away to make it 13-11. The Bears clawed back and eventually took the lead late 24-23. A vital kill by Mary Siebert tied it 25-25. Both teams exchanged points until a kill by Taylor Prall and a service ace by Ashley Markland gave the Bears its only set win 32-30.
"Dropping the third set like we did, we could've gotten rattled,"Â said head coach Callie Youngman. "But the players at the changeover made the decision to get back to work, trust each other, our systems, and our training."Â
Newberry silenced the Bears' comeback in the fourth set with the 25-22 victory. Back-to-back kills from Triplett and Siebert gave the Wolves a crucial win.
Taylor Garrison had 50 assists and 16 digs, her eighth double-double of the season.
The Wolves held the lead during the entire first set with the Bears committing six ball handling errors. A Bears' error gave Newberry the 25-20 win.
Newberry held the advantage in kills, digs, and assists on the night. Errors continued to be an issue with the Wolves tallying 27 compared to 21 from the Bears.
Five players recorded double-digit digs to help seal the victory.
"Tonight was a step in the direction we all want but our response is not done yet. There is more work to be done, and we will not grow weary."Â
The Wolves return to the road to face Catawba tomorrow a 5 p.m.
