Wrestling announces summer camp dates

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College wrestling program has announced the dates for its three summer camps that range from June 25-July 3.


The first option is the “Takedown Elite” camp that will take place June 25-27 and cost $150. This camp will improve takedowns and attacks on your feet. It will focus on high percentage leg attacks, set ups and finishes. Campers will learn high level takedown defense, front headlocks and scrambling. Participants will also learn throws, as well as various Freestyle and Greco techniques.


The second option is the “Tough on Top” camp that will take place from June 28-30 and cost $150. Campers will learn leg riding, arm bars, as well as a large variety of tilts and pinning maneuvers. This camp will teach participants how to maneuver their opponents while on top.


Option three is the “Intensive” camp that will take place July 1-3 and cost $150. This segment will focus on extra workouts and training sessions to help participants mentally and physically prepare for next season. In addition to high level technique, instructors will add more high pace drilling and live wrestling.


Option four is the “Champions Elite” camp that includes all three sessions listed above as well as extra workouts in between sessions which are designed to make participants a state-champion wrestler. The cost is $450. All champions elite campers will receive a custom Adidas Clima-Lite T-shirt at the completion of camp.


On-campus amenities included in the camp are dorms, the dining hall, swimming pool, game room, gym, laundry room and camp store.


Camp Director and Newberry head wrestling coach Cy Wainwright is Newberry’s only undefeated national champion after going 36-0 in the 2008-09 season with 14 pins. Camp Director and Newberry associate head wrestling coach R.C. LaHaye also had a decorated career.  At Western State, he was a 2004 All-American and three-time NCAA National Qualifier.


Camp Clinician Bryant Blanton was a three-time Division II All-American for Newberry and was the 2010 National Champion at 184 lbs. with a 41-8 record that season. Clinician BJ Young was a three-time NCAA All-American and an NCAA national finalist. He is the career wins leader at Newberry.
