Wolves edged by Trojans in overtime thriller

NEWBERRY - Free throws played a deciding role in Saturday night's conference matchup between Newberry (11-7, 7-7 SAC) and Anderson (14-4, 11-3 SAC), that needed an extra five minutes to determine a winner in a 67-63 overtime final at Eleazer Arena. 

 

The winding minutes of the fourth quarter would showcase some clutch genes from both sides at the foul line. 

 

After a Jasmine Franklin layup with 36 seconds remaining to put the Trojans up two, Newberry's Nicola Handreck would come out of a Wolves timeout with a hard drive to the basket. The junior guard would earn a trip to the line on a foul call with 12 seconds remaining, as she stepped up for her first free throws of the night. 

The first free throw falls to pull the Wolves within one, however after the second free throw glanced off the rim, Handreck chased down the rebound to give possession back to Newberry with the time winding down.


With five seconds left, Newberry's Shelby Britten was fouled on a jump shot. The sophomore guard, who lead all scorers with 20 points, drained both free throws to give the Wolves a one-point lead. 

 

The Trojans would use a timeout and advance the ball to half court before draining a second timeout to set up a play. With a foul to give, Newberry would force the Trojans to inbound the ball from under their own basket with just two seconds remaining.  

 

A foul call on Newberry on a Alexy Mollenhauer layup attempt would put Anderson at the line for two. Mollenhauer would miss the first free throw turning the Eleazer Arena crowd into a frenzy. The second free throw fell through the nylon to tie the game and send it to overtime. 

 

The Trojans would go on to outscore Newberry in the extra period by four. Five of Anderson's nine points in the extra frame came from the foul stripe.

 

Mollenhauer lead Anderson with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting. 

 

The Wolves held the Trojans scoreless in the first 5:05 of the first quarter before Anderson would rally off six straight points to take a 6-4 lead. Newberry then opened up a seven-point lead in the second quarter, which included an opening possession that brough four offensive rebounds before Britten knocked down a three-pointer. 

 

At the 2:19 mark of the first quarter, Handreck would earn her 238th career assist on a Shelby Britten jump shot, which puts her in sole posession of 10th place in school history. The Heywood, Victoria, Australia product would finish the evening with five assists, five rebounds, and six points. 

Courtney Lyons was filled into the starting lineup for the second straight game earning an impressive six offensive rebounds to help the Wolves gain 20 second chance points. She would grab a total of eight boards, tallying career-highs in both categories. The sophomore forward also chipped in 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

 

Meg Essex scored 18 points for Newberry, which included a career-high 13 free throw attempts on the night. The 6'3" center nailed eight of those shots from the foul line, a new season-high, and corralled eight rebounds.

 

Jaya Schultz lead all players with 11 rebounds in 44 minutes. The senior swatted a career-high three shots and chipped in five points.

 

Neither team would shoot the ball exceptionally well from three-point land, as both teams finished under 26 percent. Anderson and Newberry would combine for 56 points in the paint. 

 

Newberry will travel to Wingate (15-4, 11-3 SAC) on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
