Wolves put to the test, fall to ranked opponents in Super Regional Duals

NEWBERRY - The Newberry men's wrestling team jumped out to leads in both of its matches on Saturday morning, but were unable to snuff out wins vs. Tiffin and Findlay.

Despite going winless on the day,  nationally-ranked wrestlers Trung Duong (125 pounds) and Jordan Simpson (133) would look impressive in both of their matchups.

Duong, who is ranked No. 8 in Division II in his weight class, would be awarded a tech fall  in his first match vs. Tiffin's Landon Elliot, giving Newberry five points.

Simpson, who is ranked No. 8 nationally in the latest poll, defeated Tiffin's Hunter Langeloh in a 3-1 minor decision to give the Wolves an 8-0 lead. However, the Dragons would win the next two matches to gain a one-point advantage. A late fall by Garret Gray would be the deciding factor in the 21-20 victory for Tiffin.

The Dragons sit right behind Newberry at the 23rd spot in the latest NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll.

Duong and Simpson again would jump start Newberry in its match vs. Findlay, as the duo both won in minor decisions to give the Wolves a 6-0 lead. The Oilers would go on to win 5 consecutive matches en route to a 21-10 win.

Findlay would be supported by its No. 1 ranked wrestler in the 149 pound weight class, Nic Goebel, who defeated Newberry's Austin Palmer in a minor decision.

Finday sits in a four-way tie at No. 8 in NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association Poll.

Other wrestlers of note included seventh-ranked Huston Evans of Newberry, who recorded a major and minor decision on the day.

Newberry will wrestle another league opponent in Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, Feb. 1st in Belmont, N.C.. The competition will take place starting at 7:00 p.m.
