Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves rallied late in the nightcap of Tuesday's South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Queens to earn a split at Park Road Park.
Newberry lost the opening game of the twinbill in nine innings by a 4-3 count, then took an 11-8 victory in eight innings in the second contest.
Newberry is now 23-15 overall and 4-8 in South Atlantic Conference action with the split, while Queens is now 18-19 overall and 7-5 in the league.
GAME ONE: Queens 4, Newberry 3 (9 innings)
- Christina Linton blasted two homeruns in the game to drive in all three Newberry runs.
- Newberry was limited to only four hits, with Lanier Paul and Maude McCourry picking up singles.
- McCourry lasted 6.0 innings in the circle, allowing three runs on three hits, eight walks and six strikeouts.
- Devon Morrison (7-8) was tagged with the loss, allowing the unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. She allowed four hits and struck out three in 2.2 innings.
Queens took the lead on a Jasmyn Lindsay leadoff homer to left field in the second inning. Queens starter Lyndey McCurry was perfect the first time throught the Wolves' order before Linton mashed her fifth homer of the season to right field and tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.
McCourry led off the top of the sixth with a single and Linton put the Wolves on top, this time blasting homerun No. 6 of the year to straightaway centerfield to make it a 3-1 game.
The Royals cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth when three straight walks with two outs brought home a run. The tying run came in the bottom of the seventh when Taylor Rosenbalm roped a leadoff homer down the left field line.
The Wolves stranded two runners in scoring position in the top of the eighth and the Royals challenged in the bottom of the frame quickly loading the bases. The winning run was thrown out at home on ground balls twice before Morrison caught a batter looking at strike three to push the game to the ninth inning.
Newberry pushed its international tiebreaker runner to third in the ninth but once again failed to convert. The Royals were down to the final out of their frame before Taylor Cheek bounced a single off the pitcher and bring home the winning run.
GAME TWO: Newberry 11, Queens 8 (8 innings)
- Hailey Drawe and Allison Van Atta each drove in three runs in the game, with Drawe going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in the extra inning.
- McCourry and Lanier Paul each drove in two runs.
- In additions to Drawe's big blast, Paul and Natalie Willis each hit solo homers.
- McCourry pushed her pitching record to 13-6 with 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run.
McCourry plated the opening run of the game with a double to right-center to score Drawe, who led off the fourth inning with a single. Queens responded with four unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-1 lead.
Paul cut the lead in half when she led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer to left-center, but the Royals scored two runs on RBI singles with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, stretching the hosts' advantage to 6-2.
Van Atta hit a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth and Willis hit a two-out solo homer to straightaway centerfield, narrowing the deficit to 6-4. QU's Rosenbalm hit an RBI double in the bottom of the frame and the hosts took a three-run lead to the final regulation inning.
Newberry rallied to tie the game with three runs in the top of the seventh. A Linton walk and Morgan Sweeney single to lead off the inning brought the tying run to the plate, but an infield fly and a strikeout had the Wolves down to their final out. McCourry's RBI single up the middle kept the hopes alive and Van Atta produced with a two-run double to center to tie the game. Queens would strand the winning run on first base, sending the second game to extra innings.
With the runner on third and one out, Paul hit an infield single and an error allowed the go-ahead run to score. Linton was intentionally walked and with two outs, Drawe blasted her three-run homer to the left-center gap, stretching Newberry's lead to 11-7 headed to the bottom of the inning.
A two-out single up the middle scored a run for Queens, but the hosts could not threaten the suddenly large lead and Newberry headed home with the win.
