Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - The Newberry College softball team closed out the home sports scheduled for the scarlet and gray Tuesday afternoon, earning a South Atlantic Conference sweep of the visiting Coker Cobras. Newberry took a 4-1 win in the opening contest, then rolled to an 8-0 win in five innings in the final game.
Newberry is now 28-18 overall an 9-11 in the South Atlantic Conference heading into the final day of the regular season. The Wolves travel to Harrogate, Tenn., for a doubleheader with the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at 2 p.m. Saturday.
GAME ONE: Newberry 4, Coker 1
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead and consistently erased Coker baserunners to earn the win.
- Maude McCourry moved her pitching record to 15-8 on the year with the complete game. She allowed one earned run on five hits, walking four and striking out two.
- At the plate, Christina Linton and Natalie Willis each picked up a pair of hits. Linton scored twice, while Hailey Drawe drove in a pair of runs.
Coker's Riley Morris led off the game with single, but was picked off of first base by catcher Jeri Loffler. Newberry took the lead in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff double by Linton and a sinble by Morgan Sweeney. Linton would score on an errant throw on a steal by Sweeney to take a 1-0 lead.
McCourry helped her own cause in the second inning with a leadoff single. She scored on a two-out double down the left-field line by Willis to make it 2-0. Coker cut the lead to 2-1 in the third on an RBI single by Morris, but Loffler cut her down trying to steal second to end the inning.
Willis laid down a bunt single with one out in the fifth, followed by a single by Linton. Both runners scored on Drawe's two-out single to left-center to ensure the Newberry win in the opener.
GAME TWO: Newberry 8, Coker 0 (5 innings)
Newberry piled up 10 hits in only four innings to pick up its first mercy rule win in conference play since the 2014 home finale.
- Devon Morrison took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and had seen one batter above the minimum to that point. She moves to 10-9 on the year with the one-hit shutout, walking one and striking out three.
- Linton went 3-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Briana Clontz went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Willis also went 2-for-3.
Linton led off the bottom of the first with a single laced up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored when Sweeney reached on an error. Drawe reached on a swinging bunt and a two-run double by McCourry gave Newberry an early 3-0 lead.
The leadoff Cobra in the second reached on an error, but a fielder's choice and a double play kept Morrison's batters faced count at the minimum. Sam Robillard reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the second and Clontz' RBI single to left with two outs made it a 4-0 Newberry lead.
After a scoreless third, Newberry's offense put up four in the fourth to enforce the run-rule. With two out and a runner on base, Clontz hit a run-scoring single, McCourry walked and Willis hit an RBI single. After Allison Van Atta walked to load the bases, Lanier Paul brought in two runs with a single down the left field line. The third out was recorded when Van Atta tried to score from first, but the eighth run had alread come across.
Tayler Barcomb singled up the middle with one out to erase Morrison's no-hitter attempt, but a fly out and a ground out brought the game to its earlt conclusion.
