Box Score 2 WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry Wolves got out to early leads thanks to unearned runs in the first inning of both games of Wednesday's South Atlantic Conference split with the Wingate Bulldogs. Newberry lost the first game 4-2 before coming back for a 3-1 win in the second contest.
Newberry is now 25-17 overall and 6-10 in the South Atlantic Conference with six games remaining in the regular season. The Wolves host Tusculum for the annual Senior Day doubleheader at 2 p.m. Saturday, with a celebration of the careers of the team's five seniors between games of the twinbill.
GAME ONE: Wingate 4, Newberry 2
The Bulldogs put together a three-run rally with two outs in the fourth inning to spoil an early Newberry advantage.
- Jeri Loffler went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
- Natalie Willis picked up two hits.
- Maude McCourry was tagged with the loss to fall to 13-8 on the season, allowing four earned runs on three hits, five walks and a strikeout.
- Christina Linton saw a streak of 10 games reaching base safely snapped.
Newberry jumped out of the gates to score two runs in the top of the first inning and put the pressure on the hosts early. Morgan Sweeney hit a one-out single and a throwing error on Hailey Drawe's fielder's choice put runners in scoring position with one out. Loffler capitalized on the opportunity, smoking a two-run single up the middle.
Wingate cut the lead in half with a two-out rally in the second, as Shannen Adams drove in a run with a single after the two previous batters walked and singled.
Newberry stranded a runner in scoring position after a leadoff walk in the third inning and left runners on second and third in the fifth inning. Those stranded runners would haunt the Wolves, as Wingate's Mellena Helms tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a bases loaded walk and Morgan Hendrix gave the hosts the win with a two-run single up the middle.
GAME TWO: Newberry 3, Wingate 1
Newberry once again made the Bulldogs pay for early mistakes and this time held on for the win.
- The Wolves managed just three singles in the game, with Linton, McCourry and Briana Clontz notching base hits.
- Devon Morrison moved to 9-8 in the circle this year with the complete game win, allowing one run on six hits and three walks, striking out one. Morrison avoided trouble by stranding 10 Bulldogs on base.
Linton reached second on an error in the game's first at bat and scored when Loffler also reached on an error. Clontz' RBI single to center and McCourry's run-scoring single through the right side made it a 3-0 game for the guests.
Newberry would have only four more baserunners in the game, with just one reaching scoring position.
Katie McLaurin led off the bottom of the second with a home run for Wingate, but that would be the Bulldogs' only run of the contest. The Wolves turned a double play with the bases loaded in the fifth to end the inning and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for the win.
