Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves took both ends of their Tuesday doubleheader over the Southern Wesleyan Warriors to push their winning streak to five straight games. Newberry won the opener by a 9-1 score in 5 innings, then held on for an 8-7 win in 9 innings in the nightcap.
Newberry is now 15-7 overall this year and will host Alderson Broaddus for a 1 p.m doubleheader Saturday followed by a doubleheader vs. UNC Pembroke at 2 p.m. on March 16 to close out non-conference play.
Game One: Newberry 9, Southern Wesleyan 1 (5 innings)
- Maude McCourry struck out six and walked one, giving up one unearned run on four hits to move to 7-3 on the year in the circle.
- Seven different Wolves tallied hits and Jeri Loffler scored twice.
Newberry took advantage of early erratic pitching, sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning. Hailey Drawe scored from third on a wild pitch and a perfectly placed bunt for an RBI fielder's choice by Loffler brought home a run, followed by a bases-loaded walk by Natalie Willis and a two-run single by Ann Dee Priest made it a 5-0 game at the end of one frame.
Myranda Dills drove in one of three second inning runs with a single in response to SWU's unearned run in the top of the frame.
Newberry headed to the bottom of the fourth needing one run to set up the mercy rule victory and Briana Clontz provided that run with a pinch-hit homerun blasted to left-center.
McCourry ended the game by laying out to catch a popped up bunt and toss the ball to first for a double play.
Game Two: Newberry 8, Southern Wesleyan 7 (9 innings)
- Nicolette Myers went for 4-for-5 with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
- Drawe and McCourry each picked up two hits at the plate.
- After the Wolves gave up a three-run lead in the seventh, McCourry picked up her second win of the day to move to 8-3 on the year after allowing one unearned run on five hits in 2.2 innings with four strikeouts.
SWU scored a run each in the first and second innings and led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning where Myers and Drawe led off with back-to-back singles. McCourry's two-out single up the middle tied the game at 2-2.
The Warriors regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly, but a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame would put the Wolves on top. Drawe, Willis and Priest drove in runs with hits. A pinch hit RBI single with two outs by Jordan Henderson in the sixth pushed Newberry's lead to 6-3.
Southern Wesleyan fought back and tied the game with a two-out single by Kelly Cooper. McCourry left two SWU runners stranded on base in the eighth, but a runner on third was picked up after a failed bunt to erase Newberry's chance to win in that inning.
The guests scored a run in the ninth and had runners on second and third with none out, but a strikeout, a runner thrown out at home after a potential wild pitch and a ground out limited the damage to one run.
Morgan Sweeney tied the game with a pinch hit RBI single and Myers ended the game with a walk-off RBI single to right-center.
