Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - For the first time in 15 years, the Newberry College softball team took a doubleheader sweep over the Augusta Jaguars with a pair of wins at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday afternoon. Newberry won the opener by a 6-0 shutout before holding on for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.
The Wolves last took both ends of a doubleheader from Augusta (or Augusta State or GRU Augusta or whichever of the many and various names of the school) on March 14, 2001.
Newberry moves to 13-7 overall on the season, while Augusta falls to 8-18 overall. The Wolves host a pair of doubleheaders during Spring Break, with Southern Wesleyan visiting on Tuesday and Alderson Broaddus coming to town next Saturday.
GAME ONE: Newberry 6, Augusta 0
- Newberry pitcher Maude McCourry moved to 7-3 on the season with a complete game shutout.
- Myranda Dills had three RBIs, while Jeri Loffler reached base safely in all three trips to the plate with a pair of singles and a walk.
The Wolves jumped on the board after working out of a bases loaded jam in the first. A hit batsman, a walk and a single by Loffler loaded the bases and a double to left-center by Dills then cleared them and put Newberry up by a 3-0 score.
An RBI double by Christina Linton and a run-scoring single by Hailey Drawe in the second inning made it a 5-0 game. A perfect sacrifice squeeze by Mallory Gerndt brought home a run in the fifth to cap the scoring.
McCourry allowed five hits, walked three and struck out three in her second shutout of the season. She forced the Jaguars to strand eight runners on base and was key in turning a lineout double play.
GAME TWO: Newberry 4, Augusta 3
- A solid combined effort in the circle from Hannah Blakley and Devon Morrison (3-3) gave the Wolves the sweep after the scarlet and gray jumped out to a lead in the second inning.
- Linton and Drawe each went 2-for-4 in the game
The Jaguars took the lead in the first on an RBI triple by Lindsey Stokes and pushed their lead to 2-0 in the second inning on a Kristen Bagley RBI single.
Newberry stole the lead back in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out rally. Lanier Paul brought the first run home on an RBI double and moved to third on a bunt single by Natalie Willis. That duo executed a double steal to plate Paul and Linton's RBI single up the middle scored Willis and gave Newberry a 3-2 lead.
Drawe led off the third with a single up the middle and stole second. She scored on a single up the middle by Allison Van Atta to make it a 4-2 lead. Newberry threatened to score more throughout the game, but would strand eight more runners on the bases.
Morrison stranded Jaguars on third base in the fifth and sixth inning to shut down opportunities to tie the game. Alexis Schlein brought home a run in the sixth, but would be stranded on third.
