Shutout highlights Newberry sweep of Anderson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ANDERSON - The Newberry Wolves took a 1-0 shutout in the opener then rushed to a 7-1 win in the nightcap to take a South Atlantic Conference sweep over the Anderson Trojans on Saturday afternoon.

With the wins, Newberry moves to 22-10 on the year and 3-3 in the SAC, sweeping the Trojans for the first time since AU joined the conference for the 2011 season. Anderson is now 23-9 overall and 3-3 in the league. Newberry's last sweep over the Trojans came in 2007.

The Wolves are next in action on the road on Wednesday, March 30, with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Game One: Newberry 1, Anderson 0

  • Christina Linton opened the doubleheader with a solo homerun to right-center.
  • That would be all the Wolves would need as Maude McCourry threw her fourth shutout of the season to move to 12-5 on the season.

After Linton's fourth homer of the season, McCourry and the Wolves' defense averted the Trojans' offensive threats throughout the game. Anderson would strand five runners in scoring position. McCourry's shutout came on three hits and five walks, striking out four.

Linton's leadoff homer would be the only hit Anderson pitcher Augie Pena would allow until the seventh inning, when Myranda Dills and Allison Van Atta hit back-to-back singles with two outs.

Game Two: Newberry 7, Anderson 1

  • Hailey Drawe went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a homer short of the cycle with a triple, double and single.
  • Jeri Loffler and McCourry each picked up two hits in the game.
  • Devon Morrison moved to 7-4 on the year, allowing one run on five hits in a complete game effort, striking out eight and walking two.

Anderson took the lead in the bottom of the first when Carli Hurtado hit an infield single, moved to second on a groundout and scored after two wild pitches.

Drawe led off the fourth with a double and McCourry's double to straightaway center tied the game. AnnDee Priest doubled to left with one out in the fifth to start the Wolves' runaway rally.

A single by Natalie Willis put the pressure on, and Priest scored on an outfield error to take the lead. Drawe tripled and Loffler singled to bring home runs and a bases loaded fielders choice by Morgan Sweeney put the Wolves' lead at 5-1.

Newberry added a pair in the sixth on another Anderson error and Drawe's RBI single up the middle, all with two out.

Morrison worked around trouble in the fourth and the sixth, stranding three Trojans in scoring position.
