Wolves drop pair to Catawba

NEWBERRY - Freshman Natalie Willis hit her first career homerun for the Newberry Wolves, but visiting Catawba College unleashed a barrage of runs as the Wolves were defeated in both ends of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader Tuesday.

The guests took the first game by a 7-1 score and the second game by a 9-5 count. Newberry falls to 20-10 overall and 1-3 in SAC play entering a Saturday doubleheader at local rival Anderson. Catawba is now 20-9 on the year and 4-0 in league play.

Game One: Catawba 7, Newberry 1

  • Myranda Dills went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI single in the fourth.
  • Hailey Drawe had a double to lead off the fourth and score the Wolves' only run.
  • Maude McCourry fell to 11-5 in the circle, allowing four runs in 4.0 innings.

Catawba got on the board first with a run in the third thanks to a pair of triples. The guests extended their lead in the fourth on a two-run homer by Gina Gerone and a solo shot by Taylor Adams.

The Wolves responded in the bottom of the fourth when Drawe led off with a double that was barely short of being a homer. Dills' two-out single to short left field brought home Drawe and cut the score to 4-1.

Catawba scored an unearned run in the fifth and added to its lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. Newberry stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings, but could not cut into the lead. Catawba pitcher Carley Tysinger struck out nine Newberry batters.

Game Two: Catawba 9, Newberry 5

  • Natalie Willis went 2-for-4 with two RBIs on her first career homerun.
  • Drawe went 3-for-4 but did not score a run.
  • Devon Morrison fell to 6-4 on the year after allowing six runs in 4.0 innings.

Catawba took an early lead with a sacrifice fly in the first and pushed the lead to 3-0 with a pair of two-out RBI singles in the top of the third.

Allison Van Atta led off the bottom of the third with a single and Willis brought her home with a towering homer down the left field line to cut the lead to 3-2.

A two-out rally by Catawba brought home three runs in the top of the fourth and pushed the visitors' lead to 6-2. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Jeri Loffler hit a two-run pinch hit triple to bring Newberry within 6-4.

Catawba tacked on two more runs in the sixth with a sacrifice fly and a double. Newberry responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame after walks by McCourry and Van Atta. An RBI triple by Catawba in the top of the seventh provided the guests with their final run and Newberry stranded two runners on base in the final frame.'

The top five batters in Catawba's order combined for 11 hits of the guests' 13.
