Wolves host Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon

NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women's basketball team will play the Lions of Mars Hill on Saturday, February 6. The South Atlantic Conference matchup will take place in Eleazer Arena at 2 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WOLVES
The team defeated Wingate University 62-61, on Wednesday night. The win was Newberry’s second win against Wingate for the 2015-16 season. The Wolves’ last sweep against Wingate University was in the 2009-10 season.

For the game, Handreck finished with 18 points, six boards, five assists, and one block. Creed finished the game with 16 points, three assists, two steals and three blocks. Essex finished the game with four blocks, eight points and six boards. As a team, the Wolves shot 87.5% from the line and 46.2% from the field.

LAST MEETING WITH MARS HILL
Earlier in the 2015-16 season, the team defeated Mars Hill 76-58.

Going into the second quarter Newberry had a 16-14 lead. Creed scored Newberry’s last six points off the second period off two 3-pointers for a 43-27 lead.

From the third period to the end of the game Newberry kept the lead for the 76-58 win. The Wolves scored 15 points in the third quarter with Creed leading with seven of them.

For the game, Creed finished with 23 points and six rebounds. Handreck finished with 14 points, six assists, five rebounds, and one steal. Essex led the team in steals with two and scored 13 points while grabbing five rebounds.

SCOUTING MARS HILL
The Lions defeated Carson-Newman 83-82, after being down by 13 heading into the final quarter. The Lions outscored the Carson-Newman Eagles 26-12 over the final 10 minutes for the SAC win.

Ansley Ricker led all scorers with a game-high 28 points, including five shots from downtown. Kelsey Espinosa was a master on the boards, turning in her second double-double of the season with 11 rebounds and 21 points. Paige Chavis chipped in 15 points and six rebounds while Cadence Wilmoth dropped 10 points and five boards.

Neither team could get an advantage offensively to start the second half, trading the initial 22 points. However, the Eagles gained breathing room, taking a 58-53 lead and turning it into their biggest lead of the night at 66-53 following a layup by Kailyn Brooks at the 2:28 mark of the quarter. The game was even for the remaining of the third and C-N took a 70-57 advantage into the final quarter.

The Wolves are home again on Wednesday, February 10 against Catawba at 6 p.m.
