Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Newberry Wolves split the last day of competition at the Flagler Invitational, picking up a 4-2 win over Tuskegee in the opener and dropping a 5-2 contest to Flagler in the finale.

Newberry is now 9-5 on the season entering a home doubleheader against USC Aiken, scheduled for Tuesday at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE: Newberry 4, Tuskegee 2

  • A three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Wolves to their first win of the weekend.
  • AnnDee Priest went 2-for-3 at the plate and Hailey Drawe scored twice.
  • Maude McCourry picked up a complete game win allowing two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Newberry scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the second, when Priest's RBI single to right with two outs drove home Drawe. Tuskegee responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third, both scored with two outs to take the 2-1 lead.

The Wolves had runners on second and third in the fourth with one out, but a liner to short turned into a force out double play. The sixth inning was key for the Wolves as Willis laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt with one out and runners on first and second, and a muffed throw allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score. A run came home on a Priest fielder's choice for insurance.

Tuskegee put a runner in scoring position in the seventh, but McCourry shut the door to give the Wolves their first win of the week, snapping a four-game losing streak.

GAME TWO: Flagler 5, Newberry 2

  • Newberry held a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Saints punished the Wolves with the long ball to take the win.
  • Drawe hit her first homer of the season with two outs in the fourth inning.

Drawe's homer in the fourth opening the game's scoring, as the Wolves stranded four baserunners in the first three innings. Flagler responded with a Malloree Escue solo homer in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Morgan Sweeney hit a double with one out in the fifth and a McCourry double with two outs plated her to give Newberry a 2-1 lead. Flagler took the lead back in the bottom of the inning with a two-run homer to dead center by Mackenzie Conley.

The Saints put their insurance runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to center by Hannah Hudson and a bases loaded walk after a pair of Newberry errors.
