Box Score HICKORY, N.C.- The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team fell to the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University 60-41 in South Atlantic Conference play, on Wednesday night.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- At the half, Newberry was shooting 100% from the free throw line and 36.8% from the field. Samantha Creed led the team in points with four while Kirsten Dunsmore grabbed four boards.
- For the game, Shelby Britten finished with eight points and one assist. Emily Perry finished with seven points and rebounds while Meg Essex grabbed six boards and scored two points.
- As a team, the Wolves scored 90.9% from the line and 34.9% from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Bears got on the board first with a 3-pointer from Justyce Swango just 19 seconds into the game. Newberry didn’t score until the 7:29 mark when Essex made a layup off a pass from Dunsmore. Samara Hill cut the Bears’ lead to 8-4 with a layup at 5:35 off a pass from Nicola Handreck.
Creed got on the board with a jumper at 3:11 followed by two free throws at 2:54 from Perry. At the 1:26 mark, Colleen Leung went 2-for-2 at the line to cute L-R’s lead to 15-10.
In the last minute of the quarter, the Wolves scored four points to end the half. Hannah Lepaio hit a jumper off a pass from Leung with exactly one minute left followed by a layup from Britten with 24 seconds left.
Second Quarter
Going into the second quarter, the Wolves were down 14-23. Hall started the scoring for the quarter with a layup just 29 seconds in. Handreck went 2-for-2 at the line after being fouled by Swango at 8:27. Creed made the last basket of the quarter for Newberry with a layup with 7:56 left.
Leaving the second quarter, the Wolves were down 35-20.
Third Quarter
Newberry was quiet on offense until the 5:21 mark when Perry made the first basket of the quarter for the Wolves. Perry drained a 3-pointer with assist going to Britten. Perry scored again at the 4:13 mark with a layup off a pass from Creed.
Britten made back-to-back layups with just over two minutes left. Britten made the first one at 2:18 and the second one with 1:36 left. Creed finished the quarter for the Wolves with a layup with 43 seconds left.
Fourth Quarter
The Wolves scored just eight points in the final quarter giving the Bears the win. Hill made a layup at the 4:45 mark off a pass from Handreck to make the score 55-35, in L-R’s favor. Less than a minute later, Lepaio made a jumper off a pass from Dunsmore to try and cut the score to 55-37.
Handreck went 2-for-2 at the line again with 2:24 left before Britten closed the quarter for Newberry with a jumper at the 1:19 mark.
