Wolves go 2-1 at Patriot Duals

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – Newberry continued the 2016-17 season with a trio of competitons at the Patriot Duals, winning by nearly identical scores over Life and Southeastern before falling 19-16 to host Cumberlands in the final match of the day.

Trung Duong in the 125-point weight class, Alex Rice at 157, and Nick Young at 165 each went 3-0 on the day. Tyler Wicken won two duals and Timmy Martinez picked up one win at 133 as well, while Austin Crocker and Patton Gossett each picked up a win in their only action at 197 and 285, respectively.

Life entered the contest ranked eighth in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 20 poll, while host Cumberlands was ranked 15th in the division and Southeastern was receiving votes.

The Wolves opened the day with a 30-9 win over Life that saw Newberry pick up wins in seven of the 10 weight classes. Duong began the dual with a 16-0 tech fall that put Newberry ahead 5-0 after the 125-pound bout. Jordan Simpson and Wicken stretched the lead to 12-0 with a decision and a major decision in the next two weight classes.

After Life scored its first points of the day in the 149-pound bout, Newberry picked up wins at 157 by forfeit and by Young at 165 by fall to make the score 24-3. The teams split the final four weight classes 2-2, all winning by decision, to reach the final margin. Nick Hall and Nick Weldon provided the wins for Newberry at 174 and 285, respectively.

Dalton Bailey, the top-ranked wrestler in the NAIA in the 197-pound division, was only able to manage a 2-0 decision over Cody Brundage.

Newberry then went on to its second win in as many competitions, scoring a 31-9 win over Southeastern that was 15-0 after a fall from Duong, a tech fall by Simpson, and a major decision by Martinez in the first three weight classes. Rice picked up another win at 157, this time by a 6-0 decision, before Young earned his second win of the day by fall.

After Life pulled to within 24-9, Crocker’s decision at 197 and Gossett’s major decision at 285 sent Newberry to its second convincing win of the day.

The Wolves were thwarted in their effort for a perfect day by a 19-16 loss to Cumberlands that came down to the final bout despite taking a pair of decisions over Patriot wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes in the NAIA.

With the match tied 9-9, Young’s major decision gave the Wolves a 13-9 lead, but the Patriots scored a major decision of their own to retie the score. The teams again traded scores, this time with decisions, to knot the proceedings at 16 before the Patriots took an 8-3 decision to eke out a 19-16 win.

Newberry will next compete in two weeks at the Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis Dec. 17 and 18.
