Box Score NEWBERRY – The No. 23 Newberry (6-1, 2-1) women’s basketball team dropped their first game of the season to the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (4-3, 1-1) by a final of 66-46 on Saturday afternoon.
The loss will wrap up Newberry’s fourth game in just seven days. It was also the first home loss for Newberry who started the season 5-0 at Eleazer Arena.
Carson-Newman’s red-hot second half was a big factor in the Lady Eagles first conference victory of the season.
After trailing by just eight at halftime, Newberry struggled from the floor hitting 9 of 24 shots in the last 20 minutes. Carson-Newman used that to their advantage shooting 59.3 percent from the field in the final two quarters.
Despite being led by Mika Wester and Kailyn Brooks, who accounted for over half of the Lady Eagles’ points, Carson-Newman was held to their second lowest scoring output of the season. The Lady Eagles are averaging 85.4 points per game so far this year.
Newberry had two players in double figures as Shelby Britten led the team with 13 points, and Nicola Handreck added 12 of her own. It is just the first time this season that at least three Wolves starters failed to crack double figures. Britten grabbed seven rebounds for Newberry setting a new career high.
Handreck, who played all 40 minutes in a win vs. Wingate on Wednesday, was limited to 11 first half minutes after finding herself in foul trouble early on.
Meg Essex added eight points and four rebounds. Courtney Lyons tallied eight points and two rebounds off the bench in 26 minutes.
The Wolves will play their next game in one week as they travel on the road to Anderson on Saturday, Dec. 10. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
