Box Score ANDERSON - Backed by senior Heather Jankowy's 24 points, Newberry (6-2, 2-2) was defeated by Anderson (6-1, 3-0) by a final of 70-55 at the Abney Center on Saturday evening.
The Trojans were 10-of-15 from the three-point arch in the first half jumping out to a 22-point lead heading into the break. Jankowy accounted for eight of those three pointers, connecting on six of them.
The Wolves failed to match the Trojans hot shooting in the first 20 minutes hitting 32.9 percent of their shots to Anderson's 52.9 percent. Courtney Lyons and Nicola Handreck nailed back-to-back threes in the opening minutes, however, those would account for half of Newberry's triples on the evening.
Meg Essex finished with game with 13 points leading all Wolves players. The Sophomore added six rebounds and two blocks. Essex tabbed a new season high with seven made free throws on ten tries.
Handreck added 11 points for Newberry to go with four assists and 2 rebounds. Junior guard Samara Hill notched 10 points and seven rebounds to put three Newberry starters in double figures for the seventh time this season.
Madison Baggett was the second leading scorer for the Trojans tallying 14 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the three-point line.
Newberry will host SAC opponent Mars Hill on Wednesday, Dec. 14th at Eleazer Arena. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
