LAST MEETING FOR THE WOLVES
- The team defeated defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University 75-69 in SAC play, on Wednesday night.
- At halftime Newberry had a 29-27 lead over the Bears. As a team, the Wolves were shooting 75% from the free throw line compared to Lenoir-Rhyne’s 42.9%. Meg Essex had eight points, five boards and one block. Shelby Britten also scored eight points followed by Nicola Handreck with seven.
- For the game, Essex finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Handreck finished with 17 points and six assists followed by Samantha Creed with 13 points and five assists. The team shot 78.9% from the foul line and 46.6% from the field.
WOLVES & PIONEERS LAST MEETING
- In the 2014-15 season, the team defeated Tusculum 78-66.
- Newberry shot 42.3 percent from the field in the half and had 11 assists to only six turnovers. The Wolves also outrebounded the Pioneers at the break 24-13 with 10 of the rebounds coming on the offensive glass. That led to an 8-0 advantage in second chance points and a 20-6 advantage in points in the paint.
- Newberry was led by Creed who had 19 points and tied a career-high with nine assists. There were four players in total who reached double-figure scoring for the Wolves in the victory. Handreck had 13 points and three boards while sophomore forward Jaya Schultz had 11 points and six rebounds
PIONEERS NOTES
- The Pioneers fell to Carson-Newman 68-47 on Wednesday, January 6.
- Tusculum rookie Kasey Johnson scored a season-best 18 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. TC senior Kristen McMillion tallied a double-double of her own with 12 points and tied a season-high with a dozen boards marking her 34th career game with double-digit rebounds. Shynese Whitener, the conference’s leading scorer entering Wednesday’s action, was limited to a season-low six points as she fired 3-of-16 from the field.
- Whitener was named the Women’s College Basketball Player of the Week by Tennessee Sports Writers Association in mid November. Whitener became the first player in program history with a quadruple-double in TC’s 61- 40 season-opening win over Lees-McRae. In that contest, she tallied 11 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and a career-best eight steals.
