LAST MEETING FOR THE WOLVES
- The team fell to Benedict College 69-56 on Thursday, December 31. The game against Benedict was the Wolves’ last game of 2015.
- Newberry scored just nine points in the first quarter with Samara Hill scoring four of those points. Going into the second quarter Benedict had an 18-9 lead. Like the first quarter, Newberry only scored nine points in the second quarter.
-Going into the fourth quarter, Benedict was only up 46-40. Newberry scored 16 points in the final quarter compared to Benedict’s 23, giving Benedict the win.
-For the game, Shelby Britten led the team with 20 points and two assists. Hill finished with 13 points and one rebound while Samantha Creed finished with 10 points, five rebounds, one block, and one steal.
WOLVES & BEARS LAST MEETING
- In the 2014-15 season, the team defeated the visiting Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University 58-50. The win put the Wolves in the South Atlantic Conference championship game for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
-As a team, the Wolves posted three players in double figures as Jaya Schultz and Emily Perry both scored 10 points in the victory. The Wolves had eight players in the score column and seven of them had four points or more. The team went for 22-for-55 for 40-percent from the floor for the game. Newberry went 4-for-15 from 3-point range (26.7-percent).
- Sean Page got his fourth 20-win season during his tenure as Newberry’s head coach.
BEARS NOTES
- The Bears picked up their first home win of the year with an 80-79 victory in overtime over Catawba on Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference game. Lenoir-Rhyne junior forward Morgan Cooper added 14 points and junior forward Brooke Robinson scored 13 points and hit all six field goal attempts in the victory as well. Senior forward Shelly Harper and sophomore guard Cassidy Joyner both came off the bench to score 10 points for the Bears, who snapped a two-game losing streak. Lenoir-Rhyne held a 42-39 advantage on the boards and limited Catawba to just eight points in both the second and third periods.
-Jordan Hiatt was named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player Of The Week, league officials announced Monday.
-Hiatt, a senior guard, led the way with a game-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists in the Bears’ 80-79 overtime victory over Catawba last Saturday in a league contest at home. Hiatt also hit three 3-pointers and made three steals as Lenoir-Rhyne picked up its first home victory of the season. Hiatt averages 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game to go along with a team-leading 14 three-pointers this year and was a South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman Team pick in 2012-13.
