Wolves steamroll past Queens in SAC play on Wednesday night

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Newberry College women’s basketball team defeated Queens University of Charlotte 68-37, on Wednesday night.

With the win, Newberry improves to 11-8 overall and 10-3 in the South Atlantic Conference while Queens falls to 3-14 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • At the end of the first quarter, Newberry leads 21-4 over Queens. Meg Essex led the team with six points while the team shot 64.3% from the field.

  • Going into the final quarter, Newberry leads Queens 54-22. Newberry shot 56.5% from the field with Essex leading the team in points with 14.

  • Essex finished the game with 14 points, four blocks, and six rebounds. Emily Perry finished the game with 10 points and two rebounds while Jaya Schultz led the team in rebounds with nine.

  • As a team, Newberry shot 52.5% from the field and 42.9% from the arch.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

The Wolves got on the board first with a layup from Essex less than a minute into the game. Essex hit another layup at the 7:51 mark off a pass from Samantha Creed. With 7:06 left, Samara Hill made a layup followed by Essex who hit a layup at 6:22.

Colleen Leung got on the board with back-to-back layups starting at the 3:58 mark. Leung hit the second layup with 2:15 left in the quarter and was fouled going up. Leung made the free throw for a 3-point play to increase Newberry’s lead to 15-4. Shelby Britten tallied the last basket for Newberry with a layup just seven seconds until the buzzer.

 

Second Quarter

Scoring was quite for both teams until the 7:02 mark when Essex made a layup for Newberry.  At 5:36 Nicola Handreck made a layup for a 25-4 lead against the Royals. With 2:12 left until halftime Leung drained a jumper in the paint followed by a jumper from Britten in the last 13 seconds to close the quarter.

 

Third Quarter

Essex started the quarter off with a layup off a pass from Kirsten Dunsmore just 23 seconds in. A little over a minute later Handreck made a layup to increase the Wolves’ lead to 35-11. Essex hit back-to-back layups starting at the 7:29 mark when she finished a pass from Hill, followed by the second layup at 7:07.

In the last minute the Wolves scored six points with Perry scoring four. Perry made a layup at the one minute mark followed by a layup from Lepaio with 46 seconds left. Perry finished the quarter for Newberry with a layup off a pass from Britten.

 

Fourth Quarter 

The Wolves scored 14 points in the final quarter with Perry, Schultz and Creed scoring three each. Brandi Hall started the scoring off by going 1-for-1 at the line at 8:52. Less than a minute later Hill hit a layup followed by a 3-pointer from Creed with 6:03 left in the game. 

Schultz made a jumper in the paint with just over three minutes left then went 1-for-1 at the 2:46 mark. Perry drained a 3-pointer off a pass from Schultz with just 2:13 left. Hall finished the game for Newberry with a layup with 1:31 left.

The Wolves are on the road again when they play Anderson on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.
