Box Score NEWBERRY- The Newberry College women’s basketball team picked up their fourth straight win after defeating Brevard College 75-50, on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Newberry improves to 9-7 overall and 8-2 in the South Atlantic Conference while Brevard drops to 1-12 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Going into halftime, Nicola Handreck scored eight points, grabbed two boards and dished out two assists. The team shot 75% from the line and 46.2% from the arch.
- After three quarters of play, Newberry led 59-29. The team shot 84.6% from the line and Samara Hill led the team with 12 points.
- For the game, Hill finished with 12 points, four boards, four assists, and one steal. Emily Perry scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds.
- The team shot 89.5% from the free throw line and 41.0% from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Tornados got on the board first but Newberry answered back quickly with a 3-pointer from Hill. The next two baskets from the Wolves were 3-pointers with Handreck and Samantha Creed making one each. Handreck hit hers at the 8:18 mark and Creed made hers at the 6:39 mark.
Perry got on the board with 4:44 left in the quarter with a jumper off a pass from Jaya Schultz. Perry then gave Newberry an 18-6 lead with a 3-pointer with 2:50 left. Hannah Lepaio got on the board with a little over one minute left with a layup off a pass from Colleen Leung. Lepaio’s layup was the last basket of the quarter for Newberry.
Second Quarter
Brandi Hall got on the board with a layup to give Newberry a 15 point lead. At the 8:27 mark, Leung drained a 3-pointer with the assist going to Britten.
Scoring was quiet from the Newberry side until the 4:58 mark when Meg Essex made a layup. Just 38 seconds later Kirsten Dunsmore went 1-for-1 at the line followed by Essex going 1-for-1. Lepaio closed the second quarter for Newberry with two made free throws giving the Wolves a 36-22 lead.
Third Quarter
Hill was hot in the early part of the quarter where she scored the first six points for Newberry. Hill hit two free throws at the 9:43 mark followed by a layup at the 8:59 mark. Hill finished the streak with a jumper at the 8:27 mark off a pass from Creed.
Newberry hit back-to-back 3-pointers with the first one coming from Creed at 6:58. The second one was made by Hill at the 6:26 mark. In the last minute of the quarter Newberry scored four points. Perry went 2-for-2 from the line at the one minute mark and Schultz hit a jumper off a pass from Leung with 34 seconds left.
Fourth Quarter
Newberry scored 16 points with Brandi Hall and Perry scoring four points each. Leung started the scoring off with a jumper at the 8:48 mark.
The Wolves didn’t score again until the 4:57 mark when Essex made a layup off a pass from Creed. Dunsmore went 2-for-2 at the line with 4:08 left in the game followed by a jumper from Handreck with 3:20 left. At the 1:15 mark Hall was sent to the line where she made both free throws. Just 15 seconds later, Hall was sent to the line again and made both shots.
Perry finished the game for Newberry with a layup off a pass from Shelby Britten.

The Wolves travel to Salisbury, N.C. to play Catawba on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.
