No. 5 Wolves finish third in SAC Tournament after 7-0 loss to No. 2 Anderson

Box Score

HARTSVILLE - The fifth-seed Newberry Wolves saw their season come to an end in the final consolation game of the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament, as the second-seed Anderson Trojans picked up a 7-0 decision at Byerly Park on Saturday afternoon.

Newberry completes its season with a record of 31-22, which marks the most wins for the program since 2007. The Wolves were predicted to finish in 12th place in the conference prior to the season and finished the regular season in fourth place and claimed third place in the league tournament.

In the consolation loss to Anderson, the Wolves fell victim to a string of Trojans' extra base hits while stranding Newberry runners on base.

After losing a coin toss, Newberry was the visiting team for the fourth straight game in the tournament, batting first. The scarlet and gray had baserunners in each of the first five innings, but were unable to push them to home plate.

Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) was stranded in scoring position after a double in the second inning, Cassie Harrell (Williamston, N.C.) was left at second base after leading off the third with a single and a pair of late strikeouts in the fourth turned out to be highly frustrating after Newberry loaded the bases with one out.

Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) was the last Newberry player to reach base with a two-out single in the fifth, which the Wolves were unable to capitalize on.

In Anderson's offensive half of each inning, the Trojans swung deep and were effective. SAC Freshman of the Year Cailah Niles hit solo homers with two outs in both the first and fifth innings to run her season homer count to 21.

Molly Child had a two-run homer in the third and a solo shot in the sixth, while Courtney Czentnar brought home a pair of runs with a double in the fifth.

Van Atta went 2-for-3 as Newberry's only multi-hit performance in the game. Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) allowed six earned runs on nine hits with a walk and a strikeout in 5.0 innings to fall to 8-10 on the season.
