Box Score 2 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry Wolves' softball team was swept in South Atlantic Conference action for the first time this season, dropping both end of Saturday's doubleheader at Carson-Newman by a 9-1 count in five innings and 8-3.
Newberry was the last team in the conference to suffer a sweep at the hands of a league foe and falls to 26-19 overall and 10-8 in the conference. Carson-Newman leads the league at 14-4 in the conference with a 32-10 overall mark.
The Wolves close out the regular season with two doubleheaders next week, traveling to Coker on Tuesday and hosting Mars Hill for Senior Day on Saturday, April 18.
Game One: Carson-Newman 9, Newberry 1 (5 innings)
Jeri Loffler (Weeki Wachee, Fla.) brought home the first run of the day to give the Wolves an early lead, but the Eagles responded with nine straight runs to pull off the run-rule victory.
Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) smoked a double down the right field line with one out in the first and Loffler would pound a single to right to score the senior ad put Newberry up 1-0.
The Wolves would take that advantage to the bottom of the third, when Newberry lost the lead. A hit batsman, a walk and a bunt single set up a rally, as the hosts sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the inning. C-N scored three times in the fourth frame and the final run in the fifth ended the game early.
Newberry had chances to cut into the lead but stranded runners on the corners in the fourth and left the bases loaded in the fifth. Cassie Harrell (Williamston, N.C.) led off the fifth with a double, but could not come around to score.
Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.; 9-4) was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs on seven hits, two walks and two hit batsmen.
Newberry registered seven base hits in the contest, with Bedard going 3-for-3.
Game Two: Carson-Newman 8, Newberry 3
Newberry fell behind in the opening frame, but came back to narrow the hosts' lead to one run before C-N's offense put up another big number to seal the sweep.
Carson-Newman took a 4-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out rally aided by a two-run homer by Lindsay Dean. Newberry put the leadoff batter aboard in three of the first four innings and couldn't scrape together a run.
That changed in the top of the fifth as Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.), Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Harrell singled to load the bases. With two outs, Bedard laced a single up the middle to score a run and two runs came home when Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) reached on an error, cutting the lead to 4-3.
The Eagles put together another two-out rally in the bottom of the inning, aided by an error in the outfield and a two-run triple by Brooke Ramsey, pushing the lead to 8-3.
Newberry put a runner aboard via the walk in the sixth and seventh innings, but were otherwise shut down, and couldn't rally again.
Van Atta went 2-for-3 in the nightcap, as the Wolves registered seven base hits once again. Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.; 5-7) was hit with the loss after allowing five earned runs in 6.0 innings on 11 hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
