Box Score 2 BRISTOL, Tenn. - A three-run seventh inning in the second game of Monday's doubleheader allowed the Newberry Wolves to earn a doubleheader sweep with the King Tornado. The hosts picked up a 5-2 win in the opener before the Wolves' 6-4 victory in the second contest.
Newberry is now 14-11 overall on the season heading into a home doubleheader against Belmont Abbey this Thursday to end the non-conference portion of the schedule. King is now 3-9 on the season.
Game One: King 5, Newberry 2
A pair of King homers proved to be the difference in the game, as the Tornado picked up three runs in the sixth inning to break open a 2-2 tie.
After Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) hit a one-out single, a walk and a Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) single loaded the bases. Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) drove in the game's opening run with a fielder's choice. King's Amanda Sports hit a two-out homer in the bottom of the frame to tie up the contest.
Chrissy Melcher gave King the lead with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth before McCourry tied up the contest in the fifth with an RBI double. King brought home the go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Hannah Smith and a Tori McComas RBI single.
Newberry pounded out 11 hits in the contest, but lined into a pair of inning-ending double plays and stranded five runners in scoring position in the contest, including four on third base.
Bedard and McCourry each earned three base hits in the contest. Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) fell to 7-3 on the season, allowing five runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking none.
Game Two: Newberry 6, King 4
Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) hit a game-winning two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to cap off a three-run rally and earn a split for Newberry on the day.
McCourry was solid in the circle again, moving to 4-1 on the season, allowing four runs - two earned - in 7.0 innings on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Jeri Loffler (Weekie Wachee, Fla.) put the Wolves on the board in the top of the first with a two-run homer to left field, her fifth of the season. King evened up the contest with an unearned run in each the first and second innings.
King took the lead on an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth, but Newberry tied up the run in the sixth. Gerndt led off with a walk, followed by Van Atta's bloop single down the left field line. After a sacrifice bunt, Nicolette Myers (Seminole, Fla.) laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to bring home the tying run.
The Tornado put runners on base with a pair of bunt singles in the sixth, and took the lead again at 4-3 with a deep sacrifice fly. However, the hosts left the bases full and were unable to extend the lead.
Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.)led off the seventh with an infield single and moved to second on a Loffler walk. McCourry tied up the game with a double blasted off the left field wall. Van Atta brought home the winning runs with an opposite field single to the right-center gap, bringing home both runners.
McCourry then sat down the Tornado with three straight groundouts to earn the victory. Ayres went 3-for-4 in the game, while Van Atta went 2-for-3.
