HILTON HEAD ISLAND – Vanessa Ortiz and Amanda Carrillo toughed out a key 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles to give Newberry a 2-1 lead heading into singles play and the Wolves went on to slip past the UNC Pembroke tennis team, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon on Hilton Head Island.
The Wolves earned victories in the No. 2 singles contest from Elizabeth Williamson, the No. 3 singles matchup from Amanda Carrillo and the No. 5 singlest matchup courtesy of Rebeca Martinez.
In doubles action Ortiz and Carrillo won 9-8 at the No. 1 doubles match, Tara Lamers and Williamson cruised 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles and Rachel Lovaas and Sierra Whaley fell 8-3 in the No. 3 doubles matchup.
Newberry is now 8-2 overall this season and will take on Dickinson (Pa.) University at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort.
