Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - Strong pitching performances and timely hitting led the Newberry Wolves to a sweep of defending Mountain East champions UVa-Wise at the Smith Road Complex on Saturday. Newberry took a 9-1 win in six innings in the opener before a comeback 4-3 win in the second contest.
With the wins, Newberry moves its record 13-10 with a South Atlantic Conference-best seven game winning streak. UVa-Wise falls to 0-4. Newberry plays at King at 2 p.m. Monday in Bristol, Tenn., before wrapping up the non-conference schedule at home Thursday against Belmont Abbey. SAC play starts at Brevard on Saturday, March 14.
Game One: Newberry 9, UVa-Wise 1 (6 innings)
Pitcher Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) moved to 7-2 on the season, allowing a run on a solo homer in the first before settling in and striking out nine Cavaliers and walking none, as the Wolves' bats ended the game early.
Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) went 4-for-4 in the game, driving in three runs with a pair of doubles and the walkoff game-winning triple in the bottom of the sixth.
In the bottom of the first, Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) brought home the first run on a bases-loaded walk, followed by a two-run double by Gerndt and a Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) RBI single to stake the Wolves to a 4-1 lead.
The lead extended to 6-1 in the third inning with a pair of RBI grounders to the shortstop, and then to 8-1 on a bases loaded hit by pitch by Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Drawe's third RBI of the game.
McCourry hit a two-out single in the sixth, and Gerndt's triple down the right field line brought the game to an early close.
Drawe reached base safely on all three trips to the plate, driving home a run in each trip. Van Atta also had two RBIs.
Game Two: Newberry 4, UVa-Wise 3
The Wolves struggled at the plate early, but did not let a fantastic performance in the circle go to waste, as the scarlet and gray earned its third consecutive sweep.
Maude McCourry was great in the circle again, striking out 12 Cavs and scattering four hits and a walk in a complete game win to move to 3-1 on the year.
Despite that, UVa-Wise took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by Monica Brandts in the second inning and a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI triple by Bridget Henzel, who scored on a passed ball.
UVa-Wise pitcher Sarah Beamer carried a no-hitter into the sixth, thanks in large part to stellar defense by third baseman Whitney Williams, who made a number of solid plays.
Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) got the Wolves on the board with a two-run triple and a hard-hit single off the pitcher by McCourry helped her own cause, as that tied the game. Nicolette Myers (Seminole Fla.) smoked a two-out single into the outfield and Gerndt was caught in a run-down, but McCourry crossed home with the winning run before her teammate was tagged.
McCourry then kept the ball in the infield with a 1-2-3 inning to close out the game and the Wolves' sweep.
