Wolves take on Bears in SAC Semifinals

NEWBERRY - Newberry is coming off a regular season in which they went 18-10 overall and finished South Atlantic Conference play at 14-8 and finished in third place.

The Wolves knocked off No. 6 seed Lincoln Memorial, 66-57 on Wednesday night in their SAC Quarterfinal matchup. Samantha Creed had 20 points in the game to lead the team while Nicola Handreck had a career-high 19 points in the victory.

Lenoir-Rhyne comes into the game with a 12-15 overall mark and finished 10-12 in the SAC which was in seventh place. The Bears pulled off the biggest upset of the tournament taking down No. 2 Wingate on Wednesday night, 80-68. Lenoir-Rhyne have a first team all-SAC member in Jazmine Charles and a second team all-SAC player Jenni Gust.

Newberry swept L-R during the regular season, winning 62-56 on Jan. 14 and the Wolves taking a 65-43 win at home on Feb. 11. The Bears take care of the ball as they turn the ball over the second fewest amount of times (Newberry is first) at 15.5 per game. They attempt the second-most free throws at 20.6 a game but shoot a low percentage at the line (67.3) while commiting the third-fewest personal fouls per game at 17.0.

Defensively, they hold opponents to the second-lowest 3-point percentage (27.5) but rank 11th in blocks per game (1.9) and steals per game (6.0). The Bears are 10th in a lot of categories including assists per game (10.7), field goal attempts (56.5), 3-pointers made (4.1), 3-point attempts (13.0).

The Wolves on the other hand are efficient offensively. They are second in field goal percentage (42.8) and assists (14.9) and do it second fewest shot attempts (55.0). Newberry turns the ball over the fewest amount at 15.4 turnovers per game. Defensively, they give up the second-fewest points per game (59.9) and the third lowest shooting percentage to opponents (38.8). Newberry does sit near the bottom in 10th place in rebounds per game (35.8), free throws made (13.0), free throw attempts (17.8) and steals (6.4).
