Wolves pull off pair of comebacks to sweep Erskine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY - A pair of late offensive comebacks allowed the Newberry Wolves to sweep the visiting Flying Fleet of Erskine on Wednesday, as the hosts earned wins of 3-2 and 6-4 at the Smith Road Complex.

With the sweep, Newberry is now 11-10 on the season and pushes its winning streak to five games, while Erskine falls to 5-7 on the season. Newberry next hosts UVa-Wise for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

Game One: Newberry 3, Erskine 2
Gabby Bedard
(Winder, Ga.) laced a two-run walkoff triple to right-center to salvage a Newberry win from the jaws of defeat after a solid pitching performance.

Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.; 6-2) struck out eight batters in the game and allowed only two runs on three hits, but the Wolves' offense was unable to help her out much until late in the game.

Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) blooped a single down the right field line to bring home an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, but Newberry's offense proceeded to strand five runners on base through the middle innings.

Erskine shortstop Brittany Reynolds hit a two-run single with two outs in the top of the fifth, and Newberry's inability to bring home runners appeared to haunt the hosts down the stretch.

Newberry rallied in the bottom of the seventh though, as Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) and Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.) both hit deep infield singles to lead off the inning. With the outfield aligned for an opposite field hit, Bedard pulled a triple to the gap to bring the game to a close in the hosts' favor.

Bedard and McCourry each had two hits in the game.

Game Two: Newberry 6, Erskine 4
Jeri Loffler
(Weekie Wachee, Fla.) hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the bottom and a two-run bases loaded single by Lanier Paul (Buford, Ga.) pushed the Wolves to the sweep.

Drawe drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first to start the scoring for Newberry, but a pair of RBI singles with two outs in the top of the third pushed the Fleet to a 3-1 lead. Drawe hit a deep sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 3-2.

An RBI groundout by Erskine in the fourth pushed the lead to 4-2 before the Wolves' offense exploded in the fifth. Loffler crushed a homer to straightaway center to tie the game at 4-all, rattling the Fleet's pitcher. A pair of singles by McCourry and Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) and a walk to Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) loaded the bases with two out and Paul smoked a single through the left side, driving in two and giving Newberry the lead again.

The Wolves' pitching staff allowed baserunners late, but avoided the big inning as Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.; 2-5) earned the win, allowing one run in 3.0 innings of relief. Hannah Blakely (Manning, S.C.) picked up her first save of the season, closing the game with a scoreless seventh inning.

McCourry was 3-for-4 in the contest, while Loffler and Bedard each rapped out two hits.
