Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Wolves' softball team earned walkoff wins in both ends of Saturday's home South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitters. Newberry powered to a 9-1 win in six innings in the opening contest, then took a dramatic 4-3 victory in the second game of the day.

Newberry moves to 23-14 overall and 7-3 in SAC action, which is good for third in the league, just a game behind Anderson and Carson-Newman. LMU drops to 11-15 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

This is Newberry's first win over LMU since 2011 and the first time the scarlet and gray took both ends of the doubleheader from the Railsplitters since the 2009 season.

The Wolves host Wingate at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Game One: Newberry 9, Lincoln Memorial 1 (6 innings)
Newberry pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of LMU miscues to take an early lead and pull away with the run-rule win in the sixth inning,

Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) allowed one unearned run in the sixth inning with only six LMU baserunners in the game to move to 8-1 in the circle this year. She also rached base three times with a triple, a single and a walk.

Newberry took the lead in the second on a two-out RBI single by Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.). The lead was pushed to 4-0 in the third inning, when a walk by Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) and a double to the fence by Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) sparked a three-run rally. Jeri Loffler (Weeki Wachee, Fla.) brought home a run with a single, Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) drove in a run with a groundout to the right side and pinch runner Tori Zambrano (Othello, Wash.) scored on a passed ball.

McCourry walked with one out in the fifth, and pinch runner Casey Nakawatase (Lincolnwood, Ill.) scored on a double steal, pushing Newberry's advantage to 5-0.

After LMU scratched across the unearned run in the top of the sixth, Newberry put the pedal to the metal to end the contest early. Bedard, Gerndt and Loffler each singled with one out, with Loffler's hit scoring the sixth run. Van Atta reached on a fielder's choice when the first baseman elected to throw home but failed to get the out as Gerndt slid under the tag. Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the eighth run and Nellums' two-out single through the left side ended the game.

Loffler, Van Atta and Nellums all drove in two runs apiece in the game, while Bedard, Gerndt and Van Atta each scored two runs in the game. Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) pushed her team-leading hitting streak to 12 games in the opener.

Game Two: Newberry 4, Lincoln Memorial 3
Newberry was not deterred by a re-energized LMU side, walking off with the win in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Lady Railsplitters scored two runs in the top of the first inning, but Newberry responded well. Ayres walked to lead off Newberry's turn at the plate, then stole second and advanced to third on an error. Bedard brought her home with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1. Newberry would leave the bases loaded in the first frame.

Ayres and Bedard tied the game in the second inning. With two outs, Ayres singled up the middle to push her hitting streak to 13 games. After stealing second, she tied the game on Bedard's RBI single up the middle.

McCourry started the rally to give Newberry the lead in the fourth inning, leading off with a single. Nakawatase pinch ran for her and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and made it to third on a deep fly out. Gerndt's two-out RBI single to centerfield gave Newberry the 3-2 advantage.

Newberry was unable to pull away from the Lady Railsplitters, stranding nine runners on base in the first six innings, with six of those in scoring position. LMU took advantage of that small lead, tying the game in the top of the sixth on an unearned run on a two-out single by Jennifer Moose.

After leaving two LMU runners on base in the top of the seventh inning, Newberry surged in the bottom of the frame to win in regulation. Loffler was hit by a pitch on the first ball of the inning and pinch runner Laura Zievis (Raleigh, N.C.) went to second on a sacrifice bunt. AnnDee Priest (Douglasville, Ga.) beat out an infield single and Drawe singled to left to load the bases. McCourry was the hero in the walkoff effort, blasting a game-ending hit to the fence in center to win the game.

Priest's three hits led another Newberry 12-hit effort. Ayres, Bedard, Drawe and McCourry each had two hits.

Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) was the victor in the circle, scattering seven hits in a complete game effort, with LMU scoring two earned runs. She struck out three and walked four to move to 3-5 on the season.
