Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - The Newberry College softball team followed a pair of strong pitching performances on the way to a sweep of the Brevard Tornados in the South Atlantic Conference opening doubleheader at the Smith Road Complex on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Newberry picks up its fifth straight victory and 12th win in the last 13 games. The Wolves are now 18-11 overall and 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Brevard is now 6-8 and 0-2 in league play.
The pair of shutouts is Newberry's first twin blanking since a doubleheader at Truett-McConnell on March 9, 2010. Newberry was designated as the visiting team in the games, as the twinbill was moved from Brevard due to a waterlogged field.
Newberry hosts Lenoir-Rhyne for a SAC doubleheader at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Game One: Newberry 4, Brevard 0
Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) picked up her second shutout of the season and moved to 9-3 on the year with a strong opening to the day. She scattered eight hits throughout the day and had five strikeouts against one walk.

Newberry took a few innings to get the offense going, but took the lead on a pair of RBI doubles with two outs in the fifth inning by Ayres and Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.).
Ayres drove in another run with an RBI single to center in the sixth and Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) drove in a run with a single in the seventh.
