Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Wolves' softball team took both ends of Sunday's home doubleheader over the Chowan University Hawks at the Smith Road Complex. Newberry earned a 4-2 win in the opening game before winning the nightcap by a 3-2 count.
With the wins, Newberry moves to 3-1 on the young season, while Chowan falls to 2-4. The Wolves play at GRU Augusta at 1 p.m. Tuesday and trabels to North Greenville at 1 p.m. Saturday. Newberry's next home games will come on Sunday, February 15, at 1 p.m. against Claflin.
Game One: Newberry 4, Chowan 2
Senior centerfielder Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) hit three doubles and junior catcher Jeri Loffler (Weekie Wachee, Fla.) drove in three runs to lead the Wolves to a 4-2 win in the opening game.
Senior pitcher Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) moved to 2-0 on the season after allowing only one earned run on eight hits in a complete game effort. She struck out three batters and walked two.
Ayres led off the bottom of the first with a double and gave the Wolves an early 1-0 lead on Loffler's two-out RBI single.
The Hawks took a 2-1 lead with RBI fielders' choices in the fourth and fifth innings. Newberry responded in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) and a two-run Loffler double.
Burnett stranded Chowan runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings to allow the Wolves to earn the victory.
Cassie Harrell (Williamston, N.C.) went 2-for-3 in the game and made a stellar defensive play at third base.
Game Two: Newberry 3, Chowan 2
Loffler drove in the winning run of the game in the fifth inning to lead the Wolves to their first sweep of the year.
Nicolette Myers (Seminole, Fla.) drove in the opening run of the game in the fourth and senior Lindsay Gore (Lexington, S.C.) drove in a run with an RBI single to put the Wolves up by a 2-0 score.
Chowan tied the game in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer by Tara White before pitcher Hannah Blakley (Manning, S.C.) came into the game in relief to halt the Hawks' rally.
Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Madison Tepfenhart (York, S.C.). Loffler roped a single to the left-center gap to plate Gerndt and put the Wolves up by a 3-2 score.
Blakley allowed one hit and one walk in the sixth followed up by three groundouts in the seventh to move to 1-0 on the season after 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. Starter Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on the homer but allowing only five hits.
Seven Wolves earned a hit apiece at the plate.
