Box Score 2 NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves used a big inning to kickstart the day and pull off a sweep of the visiting Davis & Elkins Senators with a five-inning 14-0 win followed by a 7-1 rout in the nightcap.
Newberry moves to 9-10 on the season, while Davis & Elkins drops to 1-3. The Wolves are scheduled to host No. 15 Georgia College at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Game One: Newberry 14, Davis & Elkins 0 (5 innings)
The Wolves pounded out 17 hits and scored 13 runs in the first inning, never allowing the Senators a sniff at a win.
Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.; 5-2) dominated the Senators from the circle, allowing only two baserunners on three hits in the shutout win.
A total of 19 Newberry batters stepped up to the plate in the first inning, with Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) driving in four runs on a pair of hits in the frame.
Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) was 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI, Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) went 3-for-3 and Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Game Two: Newberry 7, Davis & Elkins 1
The guests calmed down after Newberry's opening rout, but the Wolves scored at least one run in each of the first five innings to ease to the sweep.
Jeri Loffler (Weekie Wachee, Fla.) opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI groundout and smashed a two-run homer in the third inning.
Bedard was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Lanier Paul (Buford, Ga.) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) also picked up an RBI single in her first at bat of the season.
McCourry moved to 2-1 on the season with 4.0 scoreless innings in the start, while Middleton picked up Newberry's first save of the season, allowing one run in 3.0 innings of relief.
