Game One: Lander 4, Newberry 2
Junior catcher Jeri Loffler (Weekie Wachee, Fla.) hit a two-run homer in the second inning, but the Wolves conceded two runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings to drop the opener.
Newberry managed only four hits in the contest, with the runs coming on a single by Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) followed immediately by Loffler's second homer of the season with one out in the second frame.
The Wolves had chances to extend their lead but stranded runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings. Lander pitcher Hannah Newton had seven strikeouts in the contest.
A two-out error in the fourth allowed the Bearcats to tie the game up and a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the sixth gave the hosts the lead. A bases loaded walk rounded out the scoring.
Newberry starter Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) gave up two unearned runs in 4.0 innings in a no decision, while Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.; 1-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 2.0 innings.
Game Two: Newberry 2, Lander 0
McCourry single-handedly won the game for Newberry with the complete game shutout and a two-run double in the fifth inning to salvage the split for Newberry.
The shutout for McCourry (Centreville, Md.) was the first for Newberry in a road game since Shelley Jeffcoat shut out Tusculum on April 17, 2009. McCourry (1-1) walked two, scattered four hits and struck out one batter, allowing her defense to work behind her. McCourry stranded all six Lander baserunners, with three ending their inning in scoring position.
Newberry had chances early, stranding four runners in scoring position in the first three innings. In the fifth, Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) led off the fifth with infield singles, and McCourry's double to the right-center gap brought the pair home for the only runs of the game.
