Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Newberry Wolves responded from a rough day in the first day of the Pirate Softball Classic III with an early lead, but a late-inning comeback by the Rollins Tars handed Newberry a 4-3 loss.
The Wolves' second game of the day was cancelled by mutual agreement of the coaches. Newberry's record now stands at 6-9 overall.
The Wolves took advantage of wild Rollins pitching early in the game, but a pair of solo homers and a tough call at the plate handed Newberry the loss.
Three Newberry batters were hit by pitcher Hillary Hon, who lasted just a third of an inning. With the bases loaded, Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) and Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) drove in runs with infield singles to stake the Wolves to an early 3-0 lead.
Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) had a strong start, stranding Rollins runners on base in the first three innings. The Tars scratched a run across with two outs in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-1.
With one out in the fifth, Cassie Harrell (Williamston, N.C.) hit a double, followed by an Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) single and steal, but both runners would be stranded in scoring position. In the bottom of that inning, the Tars' Hailee Keisling hit a solo homer to narrow Newberry's edge to 3-2.
Rollins' Chelsea Reed led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to straightaway centerfield, tying the game at 3-all. After a Rollins double, the Tars would take the lead with two out in the inning on an interference call at the plate, making it 4-3.
Newberry struck out eight times, with Harrell, Ayres, Bedard and Van Atta collecting the Wolves' only hits. McCourry was tagged with her first loss of the season, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 5-plus innings.
