Box Score 2 SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Newberry Wolves dropped the first two games of a four-game trip to Armstrong State, as the scarlet and gray play in the Pirate Softball Classic III presented by Holiday Inn Savannah.
The Wolves lost a 9-1 decision to Rollins in six innings, then fell 8-1 to host Armstrong State. Newberry falls to 6-8 on the year and plays the same two teams Sunday, with the game against the Tars at 10 a.m. and the finale against the host Pirates at 2 p.m.
Game One: Rollins 9, Newberry 1 (6 inn.)
Rollins remained undefeated on the season as the Wolves stranded four runners in scoring position in a loss to open the Classic.
Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) went 2-for-3 on the day and accounted for Newberry's sole run with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning. It was her fourth homerun this week and third straight game with a round-tripper.
Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.; 4-2) was tagged with the loss, as Rollins scored nine runs on nine hits. The Tars' Hailee Keisling was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Tiffany Osmanksi hit a two-run homer in the top of the first. Sid Masso also drove in a pair of runs.
Newberry batters made solid contact throughout the game, only striking out three times, but the inability to drive in runs ended the game early.
The Wolves' best chance to score more runs came in the second when McCourry led off with a single, followed by a Jeri Loffler (Weekie Wachee, Fla.) single and a wild pitch to put two runners in scoring position with none out. Newberry was unable to convert on the situation, with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts ending the inning.
Game Two: Armstrong State 8, Newberry 1
The Pirates put up two runs apiece in four straight innings and limited the Wolves to one unearned run in Newberry's second game of the Classic.
Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) drove in the Wolves' only run, scoring Tori Zambrano (Othello, Wash.), who was pinch running after AnnDee Priest (Douglasville, Ga.) reach on an error to lead off the fifth inning.
Newberry once again had chances to score more runs throughout the contest, but three runners were stranded in scoring position. On the plus side, the Wolves forced the issue by putting the ball in play, striking out only three times in the game.
The strong Armstrong lineup had no such issues, pounding out 14 hits. Five of the eight runs were driven in with two outs, including a two-run homer by Autumn Parrish.
Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.; 1-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings.
