Newberry offense is stifled as Wolves drop pair at North Greenville

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIGERVILLE - The big inning proved to be the Newberry Wolves' downfall for the second doubleheader in a row, as the scarlet and gray dropped decisions of 4-1 and 4-0 to North Greenville in softball action on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves fall to 3-5 on the season with the losses and will host Claflin for a 1 p.m. doubleheader Sunday.

Game One: North Greenville 4, Newberry 1
The host Crusaders sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning, plating four of them while Newberry stranded seven runners on base in the opener.

Newberry pitcher Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.; 2-1) picked up her first loss of the season despite a strong overall outing. She retired the final seven Crusader batters of the game, but a pair of two-out hits including Jordan Farmer's two-run double proved to be the difference on the scoreboard.

Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) led off the sixth inning with a homer to left field to cut the deficit to 4-1, but Newberry stranded three runners in scoring position throughout the contest, not allowing for a comeback threat to come through. Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.), Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) and Allison Van Atta (Tallahassee, Fla.) each had singles in the game.

Game Two: North Greenville 4, Newberry 0
Once again, the Wolves got runners in scoring position but failed to push them across and a big Crusader first inning kept the Wolves at bay.

NGU's first two batters of the game singled and a two-run double by Jordan Farmer followed by a two-run homer from Morgan Roach provided the needed offense for the host.

Reliever Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) was very effective in her 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on four hits.

Newberry's best scoring threat came in the sixth on a pinch hit double by Laura Zievis (Raleigh, N.C.) with two outs, but the freshman and catcher Jeri Loffler (Weekie Wachee, Fla.) were stranded in scoring position.

Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.), Gerndt, Loffler, Zievis, Madison Tepfenhart (York, S.C.) and Ayres each had a hit in the contest.
