Box Score 2 AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry College softball team had leads in both games of Tuesday's doubleheader at GRU Augusta, but the Jaguars' big bats came out as the hosts handed Newberry losses of 8-2 and 11-3 (5 inn,).
Newberry drops back to .500 on the season at 3-3, suffering its first sweep of the season. The Wolves have two doubleheaders over the weekend, traveling to North Greenville on Saturday and hosting Claflin on Sunday.
Game One: GRU Augusta 8, Newberry 2
Third baseman Cassie Harrell (Williamston, N.C.) hit her firs homer of the season and Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) drove in an RBI to give the Wolves a lead in the third inning, but GRU put up seven unanswered runs to take the opening game.
GRU scored in the first on a double steal play from the corners, but Harrell's bomb with two outs in the top of the second tied up the game. Drawe hit an RBI single down the right field line to give the Wolves the lead at 2-1 in the top of the third.
The Jaguars took the lead in an emphatic way with a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the third and scored another pair in the fourth. Newberry had opportunities to cut into the lead throughout the later innings, but left the bases full in the fourth and had three runners thrown out on the basepaths in the last three innings.
GRU starter Paige Deschaine earned the win in a complete game effort with nine strikeouts helping her to allow only the two runs despite Newberry drawing five walks and picking up seven hits.
Harrell and Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) each had two hits in the contest. Hannah Blakley (Manning, S.C.; 1-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs in three innings. Maude McCourry (Centreville, Md.) allowed three runs in three innings of relief.
Game Two: GRU Augusta 11, Newberry 3 (5 inn.)
Newberry held the lead after three runs in the top of the second, but a huge surge by GRU put an early end to the doubleheader, as the Wolves suffered their first run-rule loss of the year.
After a pair of errors allowed Harrell and McCourry to reach base with one out in the second, Laura Zievis (Raleigh, N.C.) drove in a run on a single, Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) drew a bases loaded walk and Gerndt singled to put the Wolves up 3-1.
Thet seemed to motivated the hosts, who sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame, scoring six runs to reclaim the lead. GRU scored four more in the third inning to provide the final margin.
Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) allowed 10 runs to move to 0-2 on the year, with six of those earned. Gerndt had two singles aand was the only Newberry player with multiple hits in the contest.
