Newberry hosts Lenoir-Rhyne for "Blue Out" game

NEWBERRY - The Wolves play their second straight home game after knocking off Lincoln Memorial Saturday, 82-72.

The win moved Newberry’s record to 14-8 overall and 10-6 in the South Atlantic Conference. They are tied for third in the standings with Catawba who they swept during the regular season. Newberry sits four games back of Anderson and Wingate and are one game ahead of Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial before the conference standings dip off.

In the regional rankings, the Wolves moved up from No. 10 to No. 7 in the D2SIDA Southeast Regional Poll. 

Against LMU, Newberry was led by Zara Pearson (Echuca, Vic, Australia) , who scored a season-high 18 points in the victory, Haylee Lepaio had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) who also had 18 points and Jaya Schultz (Santa Clarita, Calif.) with 12 points. It was the first time Newberry had four players score in double figures since a loss against Anderson back on Dec. 6.

Haylee Lepaio is now 86 points away from tying the school’s all-time record for career points. She currently has 1,705 points. She is also five rebounds away from tying for third on the career list with Peggy Barnes.


Lenoir-Rhyne comes into the game having lost three of their last four but did beat Carson-Newman 68-62 on Saturday. The Bears are 7-13 overall and 6-10 in the SAC. For the Bears, they limit their opponents on the perimeter by holding them to an average of 28.7 percent from 3-point range, good for second in the conference. They rank fourth in offensive rebounding (13.9) and third in fewest turnovers (16.0). The Bears are tenth in made 3-point field goals, attempts, free throw percentage, and assists.


Newberry has the second highest shooting percentage (43.0) and are fourth in 3-pointers made per game (6.2) and percent (32.5). They are fourth in free throw percentage at 72.4 percent. They also turn the ball over the least amount of times at 15.7 per game and just 13.6 in conference games alone
Defensively, the Wolves have been one of the best teams. They hold opponents to league-low 59.9 ppg and boast the second best defensive field goal percentage (38.0). They do struggle on the boards only bringing down 36.5 a game, tenth in the SAC and are seventh in rebounding margin (1.1)
They rank tenth in steals (6.4) and and eighth in blocks per game.
