Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.- The Newberry College women's basketball tallied a major 73-69 win on the road against No.21 Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon.
Scoring was quiet for the first two minutes of the game. Carson-Newman was on the board first with a jumper for a 2-0 lead.
Newberry didn’t score until five minutes into the first quarter. Emily Perry finished a pass from Hannah Lepaio for a 3-pointer at the 5:20 mark. The Eagles answered back quickly with a 3-pointer for a 8-3 lead.
Carson Newman scored seven more points before Newberry scored again. Nicola Handreck hit a layup followed by a free throw to cut the Eagles’ lead to 15-6. In the last 90 seconds of the first quarter the Wolves scored six points. Handreck made a jumper giving the assist to Shelby Britten followed by a free throw made by Meg Essex. Britten then made two free throws in the last 36 seconds and Kirsten Dunsmore went 1-for-1 from the line in the last second.
Samara Hill scored first for Newberry in the second quarter. Hill drained a 3-pointer off a pass from Dunsmore at the 7:42 mark. Hill hit another basket from the arch a little over a minute later. Hill’s back-to-back 3-pointers lessened Carson-Newman’s lead to 28-18.
With 4:44 left until halftime Britten made a layup followed a 3-pointer a minute later. In the last minute Perry drained a shot from the arch. Handreck closed the second quarter with a free throw.
Going into the third quarter, Newberry was down 35-27. Britten led the team in points with seven and Perry and Hill scored six point each. Dunsmore led the team in rebounds with six and assists with three.
Perry started the third quarter off with two free throws just 17 seconds in. Samantha Creed hit a jumper at the 7:28 mark followed by two more free throws from Perry a minute later.
Carson-Newman scored nine points before Newberry scored again. Britten got the Wolves back on the board with 3:42 left in the third quarter with two free throws. Britten scored another set of free throws less than 30 seconds later.
At the 2:42 mark, Creed went 1-for-1 from the line after being fouled by a Eagles player.
In a matter of 50 seconds Brandi Hall scored four points for the Wolves. At 1:57 Hall made a layup and then made two free throws 50 seconds later. The four points from Hall lessened Carson-Newman’s lead to 51-44.
Handreck finished the third quarter for the Wolves with a 3-pointer in the last 14 seconds.
The fourth quarter turned around for the Wolves when they tied the game at 56-56. Creed scored one 3-pointer and Perry scored two 3-pointers for the tie. After that it was smooth sailing for Newberry, with a layup and free throw from Handreck for the lead.
Creed increased the lead with a free throw at the 4:10 mark followed by a 3-pointer at the 2:10 mark. In the last two minutes Newberry scored 10 more points for the 73-69 win. Handreck hit two free throws, Essex hit one free throw and Creed hit four free throws and one 3-pointer.
For the game, Creed led the team with 19 points followed by Perry with 16 and Handreck with 14. Britten had 11 points and one assist. Dunsmore grabbed nine boards and had three assists.
The Wolves are on the road on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at Wingate. The game will begin at noon.
