Wolves start regular season play in Gaffney this weekend

GAFFNEY- The Newberry College women’s basketball team are traveling to Gaffney for the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge this weekend. Newberry will first face Belmont Abbey on Friday, November 13 then will play No. 11 Limestone on Saturday, November 14.

WOLVES NOTES
-The team dropped to No. 2 University of South Carolina 93-49 last Friday. The game was the first recorded meeting between Newberry and South Carolina in women's basketball action. The Wolves shot 78.6% from the free throw line compared to the Gamecocks who shot 71.4%.

- Newberry went 21-11 in the 2014-15 campaign and won the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship.

- The Wolves returned three starters including first team all-SAC honoree Samantha Creed, SAC all-freshman team member Nicola Handreck and Jaya Schultz.

The Wolves senior standout Samantha Creed has been named an Honorable Mention Preseason All-American and the Southeast Region Preseason Player of the Year by the Women’s Division II Bulletin. Creed enters her senior season after earning WBCA honorable mention All-American, ECAC All-Star second team and first team all-South Atlantic Conference honors as a junior in 2014-15.

 

BELMONT ABBEY NOTES
-
The Crusaders have been picked to finish third in the Conference Carolinas preseason coaches poll. Belmont Abbey received one first place vote as it returns three starters from last year’s 20-10 unit that reached the Conference Carolinas semifinal.

-Senior Morgan Midkiff is the team's top returning scorer, as she averaged 13.6 points per game in 28 games last year. Point guard Briana Grier returns to lead the offense as she averaged 4.3 assists per game.

 

 LIMESTONE NOTES
-
The Saints were picked to win a fifth straight Conference Carolinas Regular Season Championship. The Saints picked up 87 total points and six of 10 first place votes in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Coaches' Poll.

-Junior guard Jasmine Kearse, a Women’s Division II Bulletin Preseason All-American, was the team’s top scorer and the national leader in three-pointers a season ago while junior guard Maurissa Lester averaged 7.1 points per game to go with 37 steals and 36 assists.

- Junior forward Amber Wright is the team’s top returning rebounder, averaging 3.4 boards per game during her sophomore season.

UP NEXT
The Wolves travel are on the road again on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. The game will start at 6 p.m. The home schedule begins with the South Atlantic Conference opener against Queens on Tuesday, November 24.
