NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves women's basketball team looks to continue a good stretch of basketball as they travel up I-26 for a meeting with the Lions of Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon.
On Wednesday night, Newberry knocked off the Catawba Indians at home, 64-60, in their last outing to improve to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference. For Mars Hill, they have now lost four straight games and on the season are 4-8 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
The Wolves have won four of their last five games including three straight victories with two of them coming against SAC foes. Their last win meant a regular sweep of Catawba who they beat on the road in November, 72-64. In the contest, the Wolves got another 20-plus point game from junior guard Samantha Creed who had 25 points and six assists in the win, making the Wolves 5-0 on the season when she hits the 20 point mark. Newberry also got 17 points and 15 rebounds from senior forward Haylee Lepaio. It was her fourth double-double on the year and she now leads the SAC in rebounding averaging 10.0 rpg.
The matchup with Mars Hill will pit the league’s top two leading scorers against each other. Newberry’s Samantha Creed is second in scoring at 18.4 ppg while Mars Hill’s Camille Glymph averages 19.2 ppg. Glymph is a Division I transfer after spending time at both Auburn University and Michigan State University. She played in 43 games for Auburn and ranked 7th in the SEC during her sophomore season in 3-pointers made per game.
Mars Hill has lost four straight games with their most recent loss being a tough 75-72 loss to league-leading Carson-Newman on Wednesday. The Lions are 2-3 against Newberry’s common opponents while the Wolves are 5-1, having played Catawba one more time than Mars Hill has. Mars Hill ranks last in defensive field goal percentage letting opponents shoot 41.7 percent from the field.
They also allow the second highest points per game as opponents are scoring 71.4 ppg. Mars Hill does foul the least amount of times in the SAC at 15.7 times a game. The Lions rank second in the conference in free throw percentage (71.4) and fourth in blocks per game (3.5) and Mars Hill creates a lot of solo opporunities as well as they rank 10th in the SAC in assists per game (10.8).
