FORT WAYNE, Ind. – An early string of losses was too much for the No. 14 Newberry Wolves to overcome in a 32-6 loss to the No. 5 Mercyhurst Lakers at the 2015 NWCA National Duals on Friday afternoon.
Newberry drops out of the bracket and has a 6-3 overall record. The Wolves will wrap up their trip to Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. Friday against Central Missouri.
The scarlet and gray lost the first six matches of the dual, with 125-pounder Trung Duong (Lynchburg, Va.) losing on a riding time point for the closest bout of the early stretch.
Joe Pittman (Forsyth, Ga.) picked up Newberry’s first victory at 174 lbs., earning a strong 10-6 decision over August Mizia, who is ranked fifth nationally.
Newberry’s other win in the dual came at 197 lbs., where Huston Evans (Springfield, Ohio) won his third straight bout to open his career in the scarlet and gray. Evans controlled the bout from start to finish in a 10-5 decision.
