Newberry hosts Catawba in rematch on Newberry High School night

NEWBERRY - The Wolves look conclude their three-game home stand with a third straight win tomorrow as they host the visiting Catawba Indians on Newberry High School night.

In their last game, knocked off the Tusculum Pioneers at home, 74-41, in their last outing to improve to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference. Catawba won on the road at Anderson, 74-60 to up their record to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in SAC play.

After a three game losing streak, the Wolves have now won three of their last four games. The Indians on the other hand have split their last four games with one of the losses coming to Division I Appalachian State. The two teams have met once already this season with the Wolves winning in Salisbury back on on Nov. 25, 72-64. In that game the Wolves were led by Samantha Creed who had 25 points and Emily Perry who had a then career-high 18 points in the victory.

Catawba does not lead the SAC in any statistical category but rank in the top half of the conference in points, 3-pointers, free throws and rebounds. Offensively, Newberry leads the conference in 3-pointers made per game and percentage. 

On the defensive side, the Wolves are the best defensive team as they allow the fewest points per game and also the lowest field goal percentage at 58.2 ppg and 34.7 percent. The Wolves do lead the conference in fewest turnovers committed during conference play alone at 13.3. Catawba also does not turn the ball over extremely often as they are fourth in the conference at 15.7 during SAC play. 

On mutual opponents, Newberry is 1-1 while Catawba is 2-0. Newberry lost to Anderson while defeating Tusculum. Newberry is tied for third in the conference with two other teams while Catawba sits one game back and tied for sixth place.

The game will tip at 6 p.m. and the Newberry High School ROTC will present the colors prior to the game. The Bulldogs women's regional championship basketbal lteam will be honored at halftime. The basketball and football teams will also be honored at the halftimes of the men's game that follows.
