Box Score NEWBERRY – Nicola Handreck and Kirsten Dunsmore both hit career-highs in scoring and Newberry had four players score in double figures to push them past the Tusculum Pioneers on Saturday afternoon, 74-41.
A 16-0 run covering the end of the first and the start of the second half blew the game wide open as Newberry eventually cruised to victory. Handreck (Heywood, Vic, Australia), a freshman guard, matched her career-high that was set against Brevard earlier this season.
Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, NSW, Australia) recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Dunsmore (Sydney, NSW, Australia) had a career-high 11 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) also added a quiet 12 points and 7 rebounds.
Newberry (8-4, 4-2) had to rebound from a sloppy start against Tusculum (2-7, 2-4) that had the Pioneers only trailing 25-22 with 1:34 remaining in the first half. From that point on the Wolves were a different team. They ended with an 8-0 run sparked by a Zara Pearson 3-pointer and finished with a Lepaio layup and a Handreck 3-pointer to make it 33-22 going into the break.
The second half was more of the same as Newberry outscored Tusculum 41-19 in the frame. They opened the second half on another 8-0 to make it a complete 16-0 run. The lead eventually ballooned to 30 points where it hovered for the last 9:29 of the game.
The Wolves outrebounded Tusculum 47-25, the largest rebounding margin of the season. They also dominated points in the paint and second chance points, 26-8 and 19-2, respectively.
Newberry will now face an opponent for the second time this season as they welcome the Catawba Indians to Eleazer Arena on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. after the Wolves won the first meeting, 72-64.
