NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Wolves women's basketball team will host the visiting Cobras of Coker College on Wednesday night inside Eleazer Arena.
Newberry returns home for the first time since Jan. 7 after beating Brevard 84-57 on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves had their biggest offensive output all season, having season-high marks in points and made field goals. In the game, Samantha Creed went 7-9 from behind the arc, marking the first time a Newberry player had made more than 5 3-pointers in a game since she did it twice in 2012-13.
Overall, the Wolves had 11 different players register a point which was also a season-high. Newberry shot 60.4 percent from the field, the highest since Dec. 1, 2007 against Flagler in which they shot 64.3 percent. In all seven South Atlantic Conference wins, the Wolves have had at least three players score in double figures mainly due to the fact that Newberry is second in the conference in assists at 15.4.
Coker is 7-9 overall and 3-7 in conference play and have lost three of its last four. Coker did upset Carson-Newman on Saturday at home, 68-61.
Newberry won the last meeting 67-58 at Coker on Nov. 19. Away from home, the Cobras haven’t been so good. They are 0-4 on the road in SAC play this season.
A lot of shots from deep will go up in the game as these teams are the top two in made 3-pointers a game. Newberry is efficient when shooting the ball. The team leads the SAC in field goal percentage, 3-point percentage and 3-pointers made per game. The Wolves shoot at a clip of 44.3 percent from the floor and 34.9 from three. Coker is eight in the conference in field goal defense but rank second in arc defense. Brevard ranks first and Newberry went 13-23 from deep against the Tornados on Saturday.
The Wolves rank dead last in the SAC in steals per game at 5.8 while Coker is fourth in the category at 9.3. The Wolves may not force many steals but they don’t turn the ball over that often and are tied for first in fewest turnovers at 16.6 per game. Coker is just behind in that category at only 16.9 per game.
Defensively, Newberry has been stifling, only allowing 58.6 points a game, almost four points lower than the next closest team. Opponents are also only shooting 35.7 percent from the field, tops in the SAC. Coker has the third worst rebounding margin at -4.9 a game while Newberry is five spots better at +1.9.
The game will start at 6 p.m. and can be heard on WDKD 1240 AM or seen live online at NewberryWolves.tv via our webstream.
