Creed, Schultz lead Wolves as they blow past Tornados

Box Score

BREVARD, N.C. – The Newberry Wolves women’s basketball team pieced together arguably their most complete performance of the season as they blew past the Brevard College tornados on Saturday afternoon, 84-57, for a season sweep.

Jaya Schultz (Santa Clarita, Calif.) followed up her 14 point and eight rebound performance on Wednesday with a 13 point, 8 rebound and a career-high seven assist effort that saw her come close to a triple-double. Schultz joined Samantha Creed (Montmorency, Vic, Australia) who poured in a game-high 26 points to go along with five assists and just one turnover as the statistic leaders.

Brevard score the first bucket of the game to lead 2-0 with 19:45 remaining but that was the largest lead the Tornados would have. Newberry took the lead for good on a Shultz jumper and it was followed by a Creed 3-pointer and never looked by.

The Wolves closed the first half with runs of 7-0 and 6-0 to build their way to a 43-31. Newberry, who holds opponents to the lowest field goal percentage in the South Atlantic Conference, allowed the Tornados to shoot 47.6 percent in the first half.

Newberry was able to pull away as they posted season-high marks in overall field goal percentage and in 3-point percentage. Brevard is currently the top rated team in the SAC on perimeter defense but Newberry went 8-14 in the first half alone and were 13-23 for the game. The Wolves only had three turnovers in the half and 11 in the game as a whole.

In the second half, a 12-0 run by Newberry while holding Brevard scoreless for over six minutes blew the game wide open. The Wolves would maintain at least at 16 point lead the rest of the way in the big victory.

Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, NSW, Australia) also had 16 points and six rebounds to join the other two in double figures. Overall, the Wolves had 11 players score in the contest which is the most all season.

Newberry had the second most points they’ve scored all season and made a season-high 32 field goals in the game. The Wolves also beat Brevard by the same margin of victory back in Eleazer Arena in November.

The win brings to a close the Wolves three-game road stand as they will now have three straight games at home, all against SAC foes.

Newberry will take the floor again on Wednesday as they host the Cobras of Coker for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
