NEWBERRY - Newberry's women's basketball team will get a rematch with the Tornados of Brevard on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolves are coming off a 62-56 on the road against the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears on Wednesday night. Newberry, who trailed at halftime of that contest, shot an incredible 14-14 from inside the arc in the second half to lift them to victory. The Wolves shot 61 percent in the frame and 48 percent for the contest.
The win kept the Wolves undefeated in games in which they held their opponent below 60 points. Newberry is 7-0 overall and 4-0 in South Atlantic conference play when keeping their opponents score low. In all of Newberry’s SAC wins this season, they have also shot 40 percent or better from the field. Their season’s shooting percentage of 43.2 is still leading the conference.
The Wolves have seen their 3-point shooting take a hit as they went just 4-25 in the game against Lenoir-Rhyne. They still rank third in the SAC in 3-point percentage after leading the category for moost of the season at 33.2 percent. The Wolves have struggled on the offensive glass and are eleventh out of twelve teams at 11.1 offensive rebounds per game. They do rank third in both assists and turnovers at 14.8 and 16.9 a game, respectively.
Brevard beat Carson-Newman in an upset victory on Wednesday night. The Tornados won 77-76 in overtime over the team previously tied for first place in the SAC. It bumped their record to 3-9 overall and 2-7 in the SAC but they have lost three of their last four games. With Newberry being one of the best 3-point shooting teams, Brevard holds opponents to the worst 3-point percentage in the SAC at 25.0 percent. They rank second in the conference in blocks per game at 3.8 and third in free throw percentage.
